Hello everyone. My name is Jeremiah Kim. I have been with Shanghai Thunderbirds ice hockey team since 2016. I used to play ice hockey for three years in my home country S.Korea.  But i think this team is really more exciting and professional hockey team I,ve ever had in my life! Because we have so many good people with warm heart, admirable parents, and more enthusiastic coaching staff! I wish you could all experience more of ice hockey with Thunderbirds. Thank you!

STMHA: No Hockey Dec 7 /

Dear STMHA Members,

Throughout the day, the STMHL Board of Directors has been carefully monitoring the extremely high pollution levels in Shanghai and reviewing recommendations from health organizations on whether to go forward with our hockey plans this weekend.

Due to the extremely high AQI, the Board of Directors is cancelling ALL hockey activities for Saturday.  We cannot be sure that the ventilation system inside the rink is good enough to keep the air clean. Coaches won’t be coming and the ice times have been cancelled. So please do not go to the rink.

The Government advises that no one takes part in any rigorous activities especially at a high AQI (hazardous).

We will keep you updated on the situation for Sunday as soon as we know. Please monitor your e-mail.

Best Regards,

To All Members,

Last weekend’s series of friendly matches in Seoul, South Korea was a fantastic success, a fine example of the camaraderie, friendship and high standard of play that defines the Thunderbirds brand.  We are proud of how the players and families represented the entire membership of the STMHA – on and off the ice.

On the ice our teams posted a combined 8-‐4 record through spirited, tough and intense battles – and at all times respected their opponents and demonstrated the principles of fair play. What a sight it was having the teams in the same facility, cheering each other on – from the unending enthusiasm and smiles of the U10, to the thrill of the U12 discovering the players they are becoming, to the U15 showing us all the elite level of play made possible through hard work and dedication.

Off the ice the families enjoyed a theatrical presentation that thrilled all ages followed by a traditional Korean barbecue dinner that left many a little bit fuller than they might have planned – a common result when combing hockey families and fine cuisine.  Most importantly it looked like our new Thunderbirds families thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Such a huge success would not have been possible without the great efforts of the key organizers.  First, thanks to Kevin Parker for championing the event. Then to our Team Managers Lindsey Eliason, Emily Yu and Edna Chan for getting us there and keeping us organized at all times. And finally to Mr. Soon Kim, our extraordinary host that arranged the on-‐ice matches, off-‐ice entertainment and for 48 straight hours went out of his way to personally attend to all of our needs -‐ we loved your new facility, and look forward to future invitations!

SSB Update

Looking forward to resumption of full operations here in Shanghai, we would like to update the membership
on recent decisions taken regarding the SSB.

U15 Team Goes 3 Wins-1Loss in Korea!!

28/10/2013

The Thunderbirds U15 Team traveled as part of a 3 team contingent from our Association in Shanghai to Seoul, Korea to be guest of the new Zenith Ice Hockey facility.  Proud to be part of the first international competition at this facility, all three of our teams were excited at the opportunity.

Each team was set to play 4 games in 2 days which was quite a test of endurance since all the opponents would have fresh legs only playing one game.  The schedule for the U15 team began with the Tigershark "B" squad who were outmatched early resulting in a 5-0 win for our Thunderbird team.

The second game saw us take on the Dragons.  A more aggressive and skilled team which overwhelmed our defense early in the game netting 2 goals in the first 5 minutes.  Dragons smelling a easy victory got surprised in the second period as the Thunderbirds came back from the first intermission with renewed purpose.  The result was a goal to put the Thunderbirds back in the game.  Both sides went hard at it over the remaining two periods exchanging shots on net and scoring chances until the Dragons netted their 3 goal putting the game out of reach for our Team.

The loss was a good lesson for our team.  Letting the easy win of the first game effect your style of play in the next game, even for a short time, can cost you the game.   Determined not to repeat this mistake the team entered the arena on the second day focused on the task at hand.

The third game did not disappoint.  The Posun Hockey School provided a very worthy opponent.  A tough, fast and skilled team, Posun presented a big challenge right from the first face off.  The Thunderbirds new gave up, they fought off the aggressive attacks in the corners, did their best to command the centre of the ice and came from behind to win 5-4.  This win was a fine example of how hard work can conquer all when it comes to hockey.

The fourth game was the biggest challenge not only because of a good opponent, but also because we had a tough game early in the day, and we were now facing a fresh team in their only game of the day.  The TIgershark "A" Team was another skilled team with lots of speed but once again our Thunderbirds were up to the challenge.  Using solid team play combined with solid passing our team fought off the wave-like attack of the Tigersharks.  Going ahead 4-2 with 5 minutes left in the 3rd the Tigersharks came at us with everything they had.  Scoring to make it 4-3 late in the third, the intensity and excitement increased.  The Thunderbirds hung on.  Even on a penalty kill with the Tigershark goalie out of the net to make it 6 on 4, we hung on to claim a well earned victory.

It was a great weekend of hockey for the U15 squad.  Our hosts Mr. Kim and Zenith Rink could not have been better.  A great facility!!  This is the Thunderbirds 3rd year with Seoul as a stop on our hockey season.  With hockey of this calibre to offer, it will continue to be a very important place to play in the future.

Thank you to Mr. Kim and all those in Korea that helped make this weekend so special for our team.  We look forward to the opportunity to host Korean teams at our rink here in Shanghai.

To All Members,

While it was not exactly the way we had wanted to start with teams in different locations, it was indeed a great pleasure to finally get our season underway.  We apologize for not being able to make better arrangements.

Feiyang / Ice Update

Our determination to bring all players in Shanghai together to play in one league, with one purpose, is not a well-shared vision.  While others say they support this vision and even repeat these very words, their actions are in dramatic conflict with our ideals.
