While I’m sure we’re all wondering ‘where did the summer go!?’, we can take solace in knowing that very shortly we
will be back at the rink together.
The STMHA Executive have been busy working with our new Fei Yang partners and as we approach the beginning of
the 2013 season we want to bring you up to speed on the planning completed thus far on personnel, schedule, registration fees and next steps.
As you are aware, consistently delivering positive hockey and life experiences to our players requires the
extreme effort and dedication of many volunteers. In recognition of the fact that two of our STMHA
Executive Committee members have transitioned out of Shanghai, we felt it was necessary to bring another
member onboard on a transitional basis, working with us to facilitate and guide the creation of a new minor
hockey association as agreed at our AGM last May.
As such we would like to inform that with immediate effect, Stanley Ma (father of Myles and Austin) has been
appointed to the STMHA Executive Committee. Those of you who know Stan are well familiar with his
dedication to the players and the association, and his thoughtful, unbiased approach to hashing through
complex issues. We thank Stan for stepping up to this new challenge and are looking forward to further
leveraging his energy, passion and insight.
We have also reached agreement with our Fei Yang partners that they will provide a Fei Yang employee to the
new association to perform Registrar duties. Hansen Qian is the nominated individual from Fei Yang and
from time to time as directed by our planning committee will be communicating with association members and
providing important information and direction. We welcome Hansen to our extended team and again thank Fei
Yang for making this resource available to us.
The fall session ice allocation has been completed – and I am very excited to inform that with our weekend
sessions fully focused on House League activities, and dedicated mid-week ice for the Select programs, our
players can expect about twice as much ice time in comparison to previous seasons’ planning assumptions!!
We are planning to kick-off with open skates during the last week of August and in early September followed
by Select try-outs over the first weekend in September. As in previous years the season will extend through
year end with off weeks coinciding with the October and December holiday periods.
Detailed scheduling information including dates, times, age groups, etc. will be communicated shortly.
As with the schedule, fall session registration fees are still in the process of being reviewed and finalized – and
to reiterate information provided at our AGM last May, we should all be expecting a cost increase. However,
reviews conducted thus far are reflecting the expected scale benefits – i.e., fees will not increase in proportion
to the significant enhancements in ice availability.
Further, giving consideration to having co-located our programs in the premiere ice facility in the greater
Shanghai region, and having gained access to coaching and administrative resources from Fei Yang, the
STMHA Executive is very pleased with the new association’s value proposition. We would also like to
recognize the efforts of our Fei Yang partners in making ice time available to the new association at fully
market competitive rates.
We will announce the House League registration and Select program fees as soon as they are finalized. In the
interim a registration deposit of RMB 2,500 per player is applicable and payable in advance of the open skates
planned to commence at the end of August. We will advise shortly regarding how we will be facilitating the
collection of the deposits.
Of immediate importance is the completion of player registrations.
Included in this communication is our registration form – players should complete the form and return to
BOTH firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com as soon as possible to secure a spot in
the league which again, will commence with open skates at the end of this month.
We are also providing the coaching application – we remain a not-for-profit organization heavily reliant on
volunteer talent from within our own ranks, and this includes coaches. Anyone interested in serving in a
coaching role, from Head Coach on down through On-Ice Assistant, should please fill out the application form
and submit to firstname.lastname@example.org. For those hesitant regarding their level of prior coaching experience, we
will be conducting coaching clinics as we have in past seasons, and we also strive to ensure ‘rookies’ are
partnered with some of our grizzled veterans.
Also, we are anticipating a potential need for ‘rink-side interpreters’ – members fluent in both English and
Mandarin to assist the communication between coaches and players as needed. If you are comfortable getting
a little bit closer to the action (the players don’t smell that bad…. well, yes, they do) we may need your
services and would like to know about those members capable and interested in helping us out in this capacity
if indeed we decide to implement such a process.
A FINAL NOTE
As we approach the new season full of excitement about a return to the ice and all of the new possibilities, we
need to remind ourselves that the journey we as an association decided to take will be a road undoubtedly full
of twists, bumps and potholes. As we go forward mistakes will be made – but all of our volunteers, and our
Fei Yang partners have the best interests of the players in mind and respectfully request your patience as we
navigate these uncharted waters and work together to create something extraordinary.
