The Shanghai Thunderbirds U9 House League playoff season got off to an exciting start this morning at the Champion’s rink with a 5-4 win for the Black team. Lauren Palmer’s hat-trick goal with only four minutes left on the clock pushed the Black team into the lead and ultimately secured the victory for Coach Matt Bradley’s team.
“Despite being short three of our regular players, I knew we would win - the momentum was there,” said an exuberant Bradley. "These kids have shown a lot of determination and drive in the last month. After a sluggish few weeks, the tide has turned with a close game 4 and tie in game 5. Today we saw they have what it takes to win the championship.”

The White team got off to a quick lead with an unassisted goal by Assistant Captain Ben Matts. Black retaliated just over a minute later when #48 Sean McGuire, slipped the puck past goalie Rory Romard. The first period ended 1-1 despite numerous shots on net.
The goal tending by White’s Rory Romard (who really did look like #31 Carey Price) and Black’s Malte Keden (The Swedish Saver) was outstanding. Both boys made their teams proud and denied the opposing teams many points.
Magnus Tedestedt’s White team took command of the second period thanks to goals by #88 Matthew Lee, #52 Joshua Cheng and the Finnish Firecracker Joakim Almi. They were assisted by team-mates George Whissell, Captain Sean Bradley and Xander Linzel. The period ended with White leading 4-2. Assistant Captain Owen Lee scored the only goal for the Black team in the second period.
“It was our game to lose, we could taste the victory,” said Tedestedt. “These kids have been leading the league all season winning three of the regular games and tying one. But this isn’t over yet - Bradley better watch his back. Saturday will be here soon enough and Team White will be back on top.”
The third period was all Black with Lauren Palmer's three goals catapulting her team to victory.
Game Two - Saturday, December 10th, 7:45 a.m. at Mercedes Benz Arena, Pudong.
