To All Members,

Last weekend’s series of friendly matches in Seoul, South Korea was a fantastic success, a fine example of the camaraderie, friendship and high standard of play that defines the Thunderbirds brand.  We are proud of how the players and families represented the entire membership of the STMHA – on and off the ice.

On the ice our teams posted a combined 8-‐4 record through spirited, tough and intense battles – and at all times respected their opponents and demonstrated the principles of fair play. What a sight it was having the teams in the same facility, cheering each other on – from the unending enthusiasm and smiles of the U10, to the thrill of the U12 discovering the players they are becoming, to the U15 showing us all the elite level of play made possible through hard work and dedication.

Off the ice the families enjoyed a theatrical presentation that thrilled all ages followed by a traditional Korean barbecue dinner that left many a little bit fuller than they might have planned – a common result when combing hockey families and fine cuisine.  Most importantly it looked like our new Thunderbirds families thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Such a huge success would not have been possible without the great efforts of the key organizers.  First, thanks to Kevin Parker for championing the event. Then to our Team Managers Lindsey Eliason, Emily Yu and Edna Chan for getting us there and keeping us organized at all times. And finally to Mr. Soon Kim, our extraordinary host that arranged the on-‐ice matches, off-‐ice entertainment and for 48 straight hours went out of his way to personally attend to all of our needs -‐ we loved your new facility, and look forward to future invitations!

SSB Update

Looking forward to resumption of full operations here in Shanghai, we would like to update the membership
on recent decisions taken regarding the SSB.

To All Members,

While it was not exactly the way we had wanted to start with teams in different locations, it was indeed a great pleasure to finally get our season underway.  We apologize for not being able to make better arrangements.

Feiyang / Ice Update

Our determination to bring all players in Shanghai together to play in one league, with one purpose, is not a well-shared vision.  While others say they support this vision and even repeat these very words, their actions are in dramatic conflict with our ideals.

With the informal communication sessions two weeks ago followed by the Special General Meeting last Wednesday evening, the Association has provided definitive direction regarding our next steps. Let’s recap….

A heartfelt thanks for all those members that were able to rearrange personal schedules on short notice to discuss the direction of STMHA.  Attendance was good, and discussion was spirited with participation by all – clearly people are passionate about the Thunderbirds.

SMHA Parents, Players and Prospectives -

I’m sure that those that were able to participate in the Greater Shanghai Open Hockey sessions we conducted with our Feiyang partners last weekend would agree that they provided a glimpse of both the possibilities at hand, as well as some of the challenges that will need to be overcome as we work together to implement a grander vision of minor hockey in Shanghai.

Overall the weekend was a success by many measures, but especially in the most important measure - smiles. Smiles as old friendships were rekindled following a long summer break, smiles as summer hockey camp experiences and equipment purchases were excitedly shared, smiles as we welcomed new players and families to our hockey fraternity, and smiles as former rivals lined up on the same side of the red line for the first time!

At this point we would like to provide some additional information –

House League Kick Off Message

The first session of the new season is building momentum and this weekend we will reach another key milestone as we kick-off the House League on Sunday September 9! We will begin this weekend with the grading of all players followed in a few weeks by the House League Draft, described later in this letter.

Our plans continue on track with what we announced in May at the AGM, and the program that was detailed for you in a previous League message which I’ll reiterate here:

“Our Association remains committed to a ‘Learn to Play Hockey’ philosophy, as opposed to ‘Learn to Skate’ – as such all registrants are required to possess some basic skating skills/ability.   In support of this key philosophy the league will be structured around mandatory House League participation with try-out based Select programs for the more advanced player.

  • Please reconfirm your rink assignments based on birth year.
  • Unless previously discussed and agreed with either Kevin Parker or Erik Eliason, please attend only your designated session. On-ice coaches will monitor players in Saturday's open skate sessions and if any adjustments are necessary for Sunday, will advise the affected participants accordingly and notify them directly
  • Full gear is required and neck guards and mouthpieces are mandatory for on-ice participation - players without either of these safety items will be asked to leave the ice

Please arrive on time and be prepared to enter the ice 10 minutes before the scheduled start time
